Abandoned house facade

After stumbling upon some forgotten World War I bunkers near my family's apartment in Stockholm while visiting last year in winter, I have become increasingly obsessed with abandoned buildings. Recalling this house near my family's summer house on Öland, off the coast of southern Sweden, which my mother and I had found several years earlier, I was determined to shoot it (hoping it was still standing), ideally at dusk, even before getting on the plane to Sweden.

Once there, I got my mother to come with me as we rediscovered this beautiful old cottage, in need of a few repairs here and there. Indeed it was still standing, and, after a brief encounter with a neighbour (and his dog on a tight leash), I set up my tripod and fought off the mosquitos while the exposures were captured. (I was so eager to get to the shoot that I forgot to set the time zone correctly on my camera, so the Exif data is lying; the photo was actually taken at 9:55 PM on June 26.)

While I was pretty unsuccessful fighting off the mosquitos, and I did have a tick stuck on my side after walking through the thick vegetation, I got some shots with which I'm pretty satisfied. They're all a testament to how easily nature will reclaim that which only decades ago, we as human beings thought we had tamed. The Earth will survive what we do to it. Will we survive on the Earth that we create?
